How do I resolve a wireless communication fault?

Wireless communication between receiver unit and thermostat

In rare cases, the thermostat display and heating system receiver unit can become unpaired.
This article intends to provide context and information in order to resolve a potential fault.

Wireless communication - what is it?

Most Switchee devices use wireless communication to send control signals for heating and hot water to the heating system Wireless communication specifically refers to the communication between the display and the receiver unit. The communication between the receiver unit and heating system will always be a wired connection.

The type of wireless communication depends on which Switchee receiver unit you have, which comes in two forms - Legacy (Kappa) and New (Zeta). To know which you have - answer this simple question! ‘Is the front of the Receiver Unit a sticker, or printed directly on?’

If the front is a sticker - this is a Kappa/Legacy model (pictured left). If the front is printed - this is Zeta/New model (pictured right).

Zeta

Zeta devices are the newer version of our Switchee thermostats.

This model has been updated to improve the performance and user interface for pairing wireless devices. It is also easier for swapping and replacing existing Switchee systems, as it allows for better cross-compatibility between devices.

A Zeta device is as easy to pair as bluetooth is to your phone. To begin, access the Admin menu in the Switchee device by tapping:

Spanner > Next x2 > Admin > Passcode: 0123

This will grant you access to the Admin menu. Next, navigate to the ‘Pair Receiver Unit’ option. If the device has previously been paired with a Receiver Unit, please choose the option to ‘Reset Pair’ to delete this previous pairing.

Once the pairing page has been loaded, you should activate the Receiver Unit for pairing. To do this, hold the Override button on the front of the receiver unit for 5 seconds.

The green LED above the wireless signal symbol will begin to flash slowly, indicating the receiver unit is now ready for pairing.

Finally, return to the thermostat display, and press ‘Pair’. This will then search for the Receiver Unit you have just activated for pairing, and within a few seconds the device should read a message to say ‘Paired Successfully’.

If this has failed, a message will display reading ‘Pairing Failed: Timeout’. Please try to restart the process, first completing a hard reset of the system by disabling power to the Receiver Unit (and thermostat display if powered via AC Adapter)

If the ‘Pairing Failed: Timeout’ message appears three times, please call Switchee Installer Support on 0800 133 7957 for further assistance.

This process can also be attempted by residents, as no access inside the Receiver Unit is required.

Kappa

First of all, power should be isolated to the system, as access inside the Receiver Unit is required. This should be done by turning off the fused spur providing power to the heating system. Due to this, the resident should not attempt this pairing method as they will be dealing with high voltage electricity.

When the Receiver Unit cover has been removed, identify the ‘LEARN’ button on the upper-right side of the PCB.

Kappa

When you press this button, the wireless signal symbol on the front of the Receiver Unit will start to flash, showing you it is now in pairing mode. This will only stay open for a matter of seconds, so it is important to either get back to the thermostat display fast or have a second person (e.g. resident) help you with the next step.

Finally, start increasing the temperature on the display from 0 through to 30, back down to 0, and back up to 30 again. This must be done with as little delay from pressing the learn button as possible, otherwise the pairing status of the receiver unit will timeout.

Rapidly tapping the increase and decrease temperature sends signals to the receiver unit that it will recognise as Switchee control signals, which will tell it to attempt to pair with the device sending those signals.

Once the green light on the Receiver Unit has stopped flashing, turn the target temperature up to 30 to test whether this has paired to the BRU again. If no red light appears (to show heating has turned on), please re-try this process. If you attempt multiple times without a resolution, please call 0800 133 7957 to speak to installer support.
