What to check and how to reset your device
If your Switchee thermostat screen is blank, frozen, or not responding, a reset usually fixes the issue.
Even if the screen isn’t working, you can still control your heating or hot water using the Boiler Receiver Unit (BRU).
Follow the steps below in order.
Step 1: Check the Boiler Receiver Unit (BRU)
The Boiler Receiver Unit (BRU) is a small white box, usually located near your boiler, hot water tank, or in an airing cupboard. It communicates with your Switchee smart thermostat.
What to look for:

Any lights on the BRU → the unit has power

No lights at all → this likely indicates a power issue
⚠️ Important:

Red lights are not a fault — they indicate a call for heating or hot water

If there are no lights on the BRU, contact your housing provider immediately
Step 2: Try a reset (most issues are fixed here)
If your Switchee is plugged into a socket:
-
Switch the socket OFF
-
Wait 1 minute
-
Switch the socket ON again
If your Switchee is hard-wired (no plug):
-
Locate the boiler isolator switch
-
This looks like a normal light switch
-
Usually near the boiler, hot water tank, or airing cupboard
-

Switch it OFF for 1 minute
-
Switch it ON again
Step 3: After the reset
Once power is restored:
-
Check if the thermostat screen turns back on
-
Try pressing “+” to raise the temperature
-
Look at the BRU near your boiler
What should happen:
-
The red radiator light on the BRU should come on when you raise the temperature
-
✔ This means the system is working again
-
If nothing happens, try the reset one more time.
Step 4: Use the BRU override if the screen still doesn’t work
If the thermostat screen remains unresponsive, you can still manually control heating or hot water.
Using the override button on the BRU:

Press the red override button once:

Under the radiator symbol for heating
-
Under the water droplet symbol for hot water

The light will flash red/orange while that function is ON
-
Press again to switch it OFF
⚠️ When using override:
-
You cannot control the temperature
-
It simply turns heating or hot water ON or OFF
If the override does not work
Check the BRU lights:
-
The BRU should show green lights when powered
-
Red lights appear only when heating or hot water is requested
If:
-
No lights are showing at all, or
-
Override does nothing
👉 Contact your housing provider immediately so they can arrange an urgent engineer visit.
