Troubleshooting a Boiler Receiver Unit (BRU) with no power
This guide helps you understand why your heating might not be working and what to check before contacting your housing provider.
What is the Boiler Receiver Unit (BRU)?
The Boiler Receiver Unit (BRU) is a small white or grey box, similar in size to your thermostat. It has a Switchee logo and a red override button.
You’ll usually find the BRU:
-
Near your boiler
-
In an airing cupboard
-
Next to your hot water tank
The BRU sends heating commands from your Switchee smart thermostat to your heating system.
Step-by-step checks:
- Check your boiler:
- Look for any lights on your boiler or heat pump.
- Make sure the main switch on your boiler is ON.
- Look for any error codes or warning lights on the boiler's display.
- Check your BRU (Boiler Receiver Unit):
- Find the BRU, usually near your boiler.
- See if any lights on the BRU are on. This means it has power.
- Check your head unit (thermostat/controller):
- Is your head unit turned on? Look for any lights on it.
- Is your head unit plugged into a socket or wired into the heating system
What the lights mean:
- Boiler lights: If there are no lights on your boiler, it might not be getting power or could have an internal problem.
- BRU lights: If your BRU has no power lights, but your boiler does, the problem is likely with the BRU itself or how it's connected.
What to do next:
If you've followed these steps and your heating still isn't working, or if the BRU still shows no power, you may need your housing provider to look at it.
